Israelis hunt for local mermaid

Wednesday, August 12, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

Over the past few months dozens of people from the northern Israel coastal town of Kiryat Yam have reported seeing a creature that resembles a young girl leaping out of the water and doing tricks just offshore, before disappearing again beneath the waves.

The reports have resulted in crowds of Israelis showing up at local beaches hoping to catch a glimpse of the mermaid.

In response to the phenomenon, the Kiryat Yam Municipality is offering a $1 million cash reward to anyone who can prove the creature's existence.
