The threats by right-wing Jewish militants against Israeli Cabinet ministers remains a hot subject. Radio and TV have been running stories comparing the atmosphere of “incitement” to the situation before the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995. Prime Minister Sharon told legislators that he hired private security guards to protect the grave of his wife, Lily, after militants opposed to the Gaza withdrawal threatened to desecrate it. Fearing another assassination, there are growing calls for preventative arrests of religious extremists. But the police and justice system are reluctant to take action that could violate freedom of speech and expression.
