An Israeli Arab man was shot dead on Tuesday while attempting to run down Israeli soldiers with his car. The incident started at an Israeli army checkpoint near the Judean town of Bethlehem, where the Arab man, a resident of Jerusalem, refused to stop for a routine security check and sped through the crossing, nearly hitting the soldiers.
Several of the soldiers searched for the vehicle and found it a short time later at a nearby gas station. When they demanded that the man halt and submit to a security check, he instead began driving at them. The soldiers reportedly fired several warning shot, both in the air and at the car's tires, before finally targeting the driver himself.
A paramedic team pronounced the Arab man dead at the scene.
In other violence, Palestinian terrorists operating out of the Gaza Strip opened fire on Israeli workers doing maintenance work on the security fence that separates the Hamas-ruled territory from southern Israel.
There were no injuries in the shooting, and Israeli forces responded by firing tank shells at the terrorist gunmen.
