Security tightened at the Temple Mount

Thursday, February 17, 2005 |

Israel is tightening security at the Temple Mount, after intelligence officials warned that Jewish militants are planning an attack on the Mosque of Al Aksa, the third holiest site in Islam. Such an attack, which would fire up the entire Moslem world, would be a last ditch attempt at thwarting Sharon's Gaza withdrawal plan. Police have beefed up their forces guarding the site and will spend more than $1 million for surveillance equipment. A Temple Mount attack is an apocalyptic scenario that Israel hopes to avoid.
