UN tries again to pass Goldstone Report

Thursday, October 08, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

On October 14, the UN will try for the second time to advance the Goldstone Report into the recent Gaza war, and consider its recommendation to indict Israeli political and military figures.

A Palestinian-authored resolution to adopt the report was supposed to be held by the UN Human Rights Councl earlier in the week, but was deferred after Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas inexplicably withdrew the motion.

At the request of Libya, the UN Security Council agreed to move up its monthly session to next week in order to move forward on the Goldstone Report while the issue is still hot. The Security Council had been reluctant to deal with the Goldstone Report until the Human Rights Council voted on it, but agreed to discuss those parts of the document accusing Israel of war crimes.

"We have to keep this momentum regarding this report," Libyan Ambassador Abdurrahman Shalgham told reporters.

The Goldstone Report recommends that the UN forward its allegations to the International Criminal Court in the Hague where Israeli leaders will be prosecuted for the crimes the Palestinians accuse them of.
