A top former US military official at the weekend said that if Israel decides to militarily intervene in Iran's nuclear program, the US will likely be compelled to join the attack.
Speaking at a conference organized by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, former deputy commander of United States European Command Gen. Charles F. Wald noted that in the event of a military confrontation between Israel and Iran, domestic pressure would build for President Barack Obama to use US forces based in Iraq to back the forces of the Jewish state.
Wald said that in the event of an Israeli assault, Jerusalem would probably be banking on the above happening, since the Israeli army, as capable as it is, would not be able to sustain the kind of large-scale military assault needed on its own.
Israel "has a fantastic military, but not big enough for weeks or months of attacks - hundreds of sorties per day," explained Wald.
