Palestinian home demolitions halted

Friday, February 18, 2005 |

Israel has suspended the controversial policy of demolishing the family homes of Palestinian suicide bombers and gunmen, which was aimed at deterring terrorists. The decision follows an army report that said the demolition of homes was ineffective and only increased Palestinian resentment and hatred toward Israel. During the past four and a half years of conflict, Israel has destroyed 675 homes as punishment or deterrence. Israeli officials say the decision is aimed of strengthening the cease-fire. The Palestinians, who see home demolitions as collective punishment, welcomed the decision as a step in the right direction.
