Many people seeking fame and celebrity status turn to YouTube. The popular video sharing website has turned more than a few average folks into household names overnight.
But YouTube's newest "star" is already known around the world. Israeli President Shimon Peres hopes to use his new YouTube "channel" to communicate Israel's positions to the world and to get direct messages to the leaders and citizens of countries that would otherwise not give him or any other Israeli the time of day.
Most importantly, Peres hopes to communicate with the citizens of countries where Israel is portrayed as a bloodthirsty enemy in state-run media. Most people in countries such as Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia grow up believing Israelis are little better than demons because they have never had an opportunity to hear directly from Israelis.
Peres officially launched the channel at a press conference at the President's Residence in Jerusalem. We was joined by YouTube founder Chad Hurley, who is in Israel to attend a social media conference.
