The Palestinian Authority on Sunday cancelled the first Miss Palestine beauty pageant scheduled to be held in the de facto Palestinian capital of Ramallah, arguing that it would coincide with the anniversary of last year's Gaza war.
The Jerusalem Post reported that the PA threatened to punish the event's organizers if they went forward with the pageant.
It was also suspected that pressure from Hamas, which had used the pageant to further sully the image of the PA in the eyes of conservative Muslims, had contributed to its cancellation.
Organizers of the pageant said some 200 young Arab girls from Judea, Samaria and sovereign Israel had applied, and 58 had been chosen to take part in the contest.
