Officials in Iran were embarrassed and outraged after the country's soccer union inadvertently sent a New Year's greeting to his counterpart in Israel on Thursday.
The email greeting came from Mohammed Ardebili, head of the Iranian Football Association's foreign relations department.
Israel's Army Radio managed to get Ardebili on the phone, and he confirmed that the greeting being sent to Israel was a mistake. When Ardebili realized who he was speaking to, he quickly ended the call.
"This is a greeting sent to the entire word," he said. "Are you speaking from Israel? I can't speak to you. This is a mistake, this is a mistake."
Nevertheless, the head of the Israel Football Association, Gil Lebanony, did not hesitate to send a reply reading, "We thank you for you Happy New Year greeting and wish all of the good people in Iran a happy new year."
