Poll shows strong Israeli support for Gaza pullout

Tuesday, February 22, 2005 |
The Israeli public is strongly behind this week's Cabinet vote approving a withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, according to a new poll. The survey by a non-partisan group called Keshet found that over two-thirds of Israelis support the plan, which calls for dismantling 21 Jewish settlements in Gaza and four more in Samaria this summer. The telephone survey of nearly 94,000 adults is billed as the biggest ever conducted on the subject. The poll showed that 68 percent of Israelis support the Gaza pullout, while 32 percent are opposed. The results are a boost to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who is facing fierce opposition from the settlers and their supporters.
