Mutiny in the Likud

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is facing a rebellion in his ruling Likud party over the Gaza plan. Twenty-six of 40 Likud parliamentarians are demanding that he hold a national referendum on the pullout. “We think a referendum is the way to go,” said Uzi Landau of the Likud. Proponents say a referendum would help prevent a split in the nation, but Sharon rejects it as a delaying tactic. So while Sharon appears to have a strong national majority for the pullout, he does not have the support of his own party.
