Israel urges US to stop giving weapons to Lebanon

Monday, January 11, 2010 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel has launched a new diplomatic campaign to convince international powers, primarily the US, to stop providing military assistance to Lebanon, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The campaign is focused on highlighting the fact that the Lebanese army and the Hizballah terrorist militia work hand-in-hand, and that any arms given to the former could end up in the hands of the latter.

As evidence of this connection between the Western-backed Lebanese military and Hizballah, Israel noted that just last month, the Lebanese parliament approved of a government platform that allows Hizballah to remain armed in violation of UN resolutions and to continue defending southern Lebanon against Israel.

Starting with President George W. Bush and continuing with President Barack Obama, the US over the past few years has provided Lebanon with aircraft, tanks, artillery, naval vessels, and a large quantity of small arms. Arms shipments in the coming months are also expected to include unmanned reconnaissance aircraft.
