Police fear Gaza pullout will spark serious violence

Thursday, February 24, 2005 |
Israeli police are preparing for drastic scenarios if and when the 21 Gaza settlements are evacuated. According to a Israel’s biggest newspaper “Yediot Ahronot,” the settlers might resist by unleashing attack dogs, building trenches, and hurling hot oil at police. The report, based on a “secret” police document, said the most extreme scenario is that settlers could fire their weapons or commit a mass suicide similar to the one in Waco, Texas in 1993. Reports like this are charging the atmosphere ahead of the planned pullout in July. The Jewish Settlement Council accuses the government and left-wing media of creating an atmosphere of hysteria with the aim of discrediting the setters and their supporters.
