Top NATO official in Israel

NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is in Jerusalem, where he met with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom. De Hoop Scheffer told the Hebrew daily “Ha’aretz” that NATO wants to increase its military cooperation with Israel, especially in the areas of sharing intelligence and fighting the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. He said NATO would be willing to send peacekeeping troops in the event that Israel and the Palestinians sign a final peace agreement.
