US to Lebanon: Stop Hizballah arms smuggling, or face Israeli wrath

Tuesday, March 02, 2010 |  Israel Today Staff

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday sent a message to Lebanon that it must stop the Hizballah terrorist militia from importing arms, or risk facing another round of Israeli air strikes.

According to the London-based Arabic newspaper Al Hayat, Clinton sent the message to Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri via US Ambassador to Lebanon Michele Sison. Clinton noted that Washington would be unable to stop an Israeli air strike on Lebanon if Lebanon continues to justify such action by allowing Hizballah to arm itself with missiles supplied by Iran and Syria.

Berri reportedly replied that Lebanon could stop the arms smuggling, but will only do so if the US stops providing arms to Israel. He insisted that Hizballah's rearming in violation of UN resolutions is an integral part of Lebanon's efforts to defend itself against Israel.
