Hundreds of Palestinian rioters, including a large number of prominent members of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' ruling Fatah faction, attacked Israeli police at a prison north of Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Three Israeli officers were wounded by stones as they worked to disperse the rioters, who were demonstrating against the incarceration of senior Fatah official Abbas Zaki.
Zaki was arrested on Sunday after leading a group of Palestinian protestors who stormed an Israeli army post at the Jewish holy site of Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem.
Zaki is described as the most senior Fatah official arrested by Israel in over 17 years.
Arab media reported that the Abbas regime had decided to ramp up "popular resistance" in response to Zaki's arrest.
