Syria supplies Lebanon's Hizballah with ballistic missiles

Syria has supplied Lebanon's Hizballah terrorist militia with an unspecified number of SCUD ballistic missiles, US officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The new arsenal of SCUDs gives Hizballah the ability to hit any target in Israel should hostilities resume. The SCUDs also carry a far heavier payload than the thousands of smaller missiles Hizballah rained down on northern Israel during the Second Lebanon War in 2006.

Senior US officials familiar with the incident told The Wall Street Journal that the SCUD missiles given to Hizballah were built using either North Korean or Russian technology.

The American acknowledgement came just hours after Israeli officials accused Syria of continuing to actively support terrorism against Israel, while pretending to want peace.

"Syria claims that it wants peace, while simultaneously delivering Scud missiles to Hezbollah, which is constantly threatening the security of the state of Israel," President Shimon Peres told Israel Radio.

US congressional leaders have threatened to block the appointment of a new American ambassador to Syria unless the Obama Administration puts heavy pressure on Damascus to stop backing Hizballah and other anti-Israel terrorist organizations.
