Israel bans Apple's iPad

Thursday, April 15, 2010 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel's Communications Ministry has issued a blanket ban on the entry of Apple's new iPad tablet computer into the country.

Several people who tried to enter Israel with iPads in their possession in recent days had the devices temporarily confiscated by customs officials.

Ministry officials said the iPad has broadcast Wi-Fi power levels that are not compatible with European standards, which are what Israel uses, and could therefore disrupt the wireless connections of other Wi-Fi users in a certain radius.

The ministry is currently working to acquire specifications regarding the iPad to being the approval process, but until that happens, visitors and returning Israelis are cautioned not to try to enter Israel with an iPad.

Apple itself has delayed the release of the iPad in Europe, the Middle East and other international markets due to a failure to meet their broadcast standards by the original release date.
