Israel launches diplomatic offensive against Syria

Monday, February 28, 2005 |

Israel is going on the diplomatic offensive against Syria, which it blames for the Sabbath eve suicide bombing in Tel Aviv that killed five Israelis and wounded 50. Israel is presenting intelligence information to the US and some European allies, which it says proves that Syria was behind the bombing claimed by the Islamic Jihad group. “We know that Islamic Jihad has their headquarters in Damascus, so you know, the connection is very clear,” Israeli spokesman Zalman Shoval told Israel Television. Israel's aim is to put more American and UN pressure on Syria, which is already facing international demands to stop aiding the insurgency in Iraq and to pull out of Lebanon.
