New Yorkers turn out en masse to support Israel

Monday, May 24, 2010 |  Israel Today Staff

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers marched down New York City's Fifth Avenue for the annual Salute to Israel Parade on Sunday.

Organizers said they were very pleased by the massive turnout, despite forecast rain. They said that as usual, the gathering consisted of Jews and non-Jews, celebrities, elected officials and foreign dignitaries. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who in the past has served as the parade's grand marshal, was also in attendance.

There were small groups of anti-Israel protestors, but they were quickly eclipsed by the masses of peaceful demonstrators voicing their support for the Jewish state.

According to independent media sources, New York Police went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the parade would not be targeted by Muslim terrorists. One such measure was the reported deployment of full cement trucks at all entrances to Fifth Avenue as a blockade against any attempted car bombings.
