Palestinian conference in London

Tuesday, March 01, 2005 |
A conference on Palestinian reform was held today in London, hosted by British Prime Minister Tony Blair. "This conference addresses our needs to find a suitable atmosphere to open political paths to put an end to violence and counter-violence," Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told representatives from more than 20 Western and Arab countries. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said ending Palestinian terrorism is a key to progress in the peace process. "Advancing reform is urgent work that cannot be deferred," she said. "It will come to nothing if terrorist groups like Palestinian Islamic Jihad continue to attack Israelis and to deny the Palestinian people the better life they deserve." Rice also urged Israel to give the Palestinians enough land to “help ensure that a new Palestinian state is truly viable. A state of scattered territories will not work," she said.
