Jews with car trouble attacked by Jerusalem Arabs

It is every Israeli's worst nightmare to have car trouble in a hostile Arab neighborhood at night. But few expect that scenario to play out on the streets of Israel's capital, Jerusalem.

That is precisely what happened to one couple on Wednesday evening when their car began to falter as they were driving through the Arab-dominated part of the neighborhood of Silwan, know to Jews as the City of David.

The couple was forced to stop the car near a local mosque, and were quickly set upon by some 40 Arab residents, some wearing masks. Stones were hurled at the car, as was a makeshift firebomb that failed to detonate. The Arabs attempted to rip the Jews from their car, but the couple was quick enough to lock the doors.

Moments later, security guards from the Jewish part of Silwan rushed to the scene, but also came under attack. The guards alerted Border Police forces in the area, who responded and dispersed the rioting Arabs.

Jewish residents of Silwan warned in remarks to Ynet that anti-Israel violence in the neighborhood is increasing, but that the authorities are too afraid of local Muslims and world opinion to do anything about it. Silwan is one of the neighborhoods the Palestinian Authority and the international community insist Israel must surrender for peace, and Jewish construction there has been harshly condemned.
