Chaos in Jenin

Tuesday, March 01, 2005 |
In another sign of how hard it will be for the Palestinian Authority to seize control of the streets from terrorist gangs, armed men confronted the new Interior Minister, Nasser Yousef, in the town of Jenin. Yousef is a tough former general assigned to the task of reining in militants and restoring law and order. He was meeting with local officials when Zakarieh Zubeidi, the local leader of the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade, and six of his men showed up at the building and began firing in the air. Security forces prevented the terrorists from entering the building and after a brief scuffle, they left. Zubeidi said he was angry that Yousef did not coordinate the visit with him. "Every city has its own gate, and Nasser Yousef did not come through the proper gate of Jenin," he said.
