'Hamas can break the Gaza blockade instantly'

US House of Representatives Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) this week issued a statement reminding the world that the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip could be ended in a moment if only Hamas took a few simple steps everyone else considers to be quite reasonable.

"Let's be clear: Hamas could end the blockade at any time by recognizing Israel's right to exist, renouncing violence, and releasing Gilad Shalit," said Hoyer.

The congressman was harshly critical of those who condemned Israel over its raid on a so-called "humanitarian aid" flotilla to Gaza last week, saying, "Israel – rightfully so – invoked its right to self-defense."

Hoyer's statement put into perspective the situation in Gaza for those intent on blaming Israel for creating and maintaining what they call a humanitarian crisis.
