Saudis to help Israel attack Iran?

Sunday, June 13, 2010 |  Israel Today Staff

The London Times reported at the weekend that Saudi Arabia had agreed to open an air corridor for Israeli warplanes to use in a future attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

"The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way," an American defense source in the Gulf told the newspaper. "They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren’t scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has all been done with the agreement of the [US] State Department."

The Times also cited an unnamed Saudi government official who confirmed his nation would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets using its airspace in order to strike Iran.

It is no secret in Israel that if international diplomatic efforts to halt Iran's nuclear program continue to fail, the Jewish state will have no choice but to intervene militarily to prevent such a serious existential threat from rising.

The biggest hurdle to such a strike, however, has been figuring out how to get Israeli warplanes to Iran. The most logical course was through US-controlled Iraqi airspace. While George W. Bush was president, that was a real possibility, but with Barack Obama in the White House and determined to make nice with Islam, it is extremely unlikely Washington would help Israel attack a Muslim nation.

Flying over Turkey is also a no-go considering the growing hostility in Ankara toward Israel.

Fortunately, the Saudis fear a nuclear-armed Iran almost as much as Israel does. With the ultimate weapon in their hands, the ayatollahs would wield enough political and military influence to exercise hegemony over the region and possibly cripple Saudi Arabia's economic influence.

Saudi Ambassador to the UK, Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf issued a statement firmly denying the Times report, though some saw his his words as a way of saving face.
