World Cup leaves Palestinians less time to attack Israelis

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officials said the World Cup taking place in South Africa has resulted in a steep reduction in the number of Palestinian attacks on Israelis.

Palestinians and Israelis both are very active soccer fans, and typically spend much of the World Cup, which occurs ever four years, glued to their televisions.

The IDF Central Command said that fact is having a big impact on the number of stoning attacks Israeli motorists endure every week on the roads of Judea and Samaria. On a typical week, there are 30 to 40 stoning attacks. But over the past two weeks since the World Cup started, that number has dropped to just 10 to 20 attacks per week.

"We would prefer to have the World Cup every year," one senior IDF official jokingly told The Jerusalem Post.
