U.S. blames Syria for Tel Aviv bombing

Wednesday, March 02, 2005 |
Israel’s diplomatic campaign to put further pressure on Syria by blaming it for last week’s suicide bombing in Tel Aviv is bearing fruit. "There is firm evidence that Palestinian Islamic Jihad, sitting in Damascus, not only knew about the attacks, but was involved in the planning," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on US television. "And so the Syrians have a lot to answer for." She, too, called for a Syrian pullout from Lebanon. Syria has come under increasing American pressure, after the US blamed it for the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in Beirut a couple of weeks ago, and for supporting the insurgency in Iraq.
