Peres wants to give Gaza settlements to the Palestinians

Thursday, March 03, 2005 |

Israel and the Palestinian Authority are negotiating the fate of Jewish property in the Gaza Strip following the planned withdrawal. Israel originally planned to demolish the Gaza settlements, but now Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres is heading negotiations on a handover of Jewish property to the Palestinians. Peres says that'll help the Gaza economy “because the greatest problem in Gaza will be employment and jobs.” Peres discussed the issue last night with Palestinian negotiator Mohamed Dahlan. Many Israelis are furious over Peres’ plan. They say the spectacle of jubilant Palestinians celebrating on abandoned Jewish property would become a symbol of Israeli defeat.
