'Messiah' attacked on Tel Aviv streets

Friday, July 30, 2010 |  Israel Today Staff

An Israeli eccentric who refers to himself as "the messiah" was brutally attacked at a Tel Aviv outdoor market late last month.

The attack was captured by a passerby on his cellphone camera and posted to Israeli media outlets. It clearly shows a number of other passersby failing to intervene as a young man in a black shirt violently assails the homeless "messiah."

The victim, who refuses to reveal his real name, but is known to locals as Arcadi, was not seriously hurt in the attack. He later told Ynet that it was not the first time those upset by title of "the messiah" had resorted to violence against him.

Rather than retaliate, he returned to the market several weeks later carrying a sign reading "Compassion and truth."
