According to Israeli police and settlement activists, some Jewish settlers are considering suicide along with their families rather than evacuate their homes in the Gaza Strip. “There are people who believe there is no purpose to life if they are kicked out of their homes,” Gaza resident and parliamentarian Zvi Hendel told the “Jerusalem Post.” There is a precedent--the biggest mass suicide in Jewish history happened in 74 AD, when 1,000 people killed themselves at Israel's famed fortress of Masada, preferring that to capture by the Romans. The question being asked here is whether Gaza will be a second Masada.
