How can Gaza's economy grow under siege?

Sunday, September 19, 2010 |  Ryan Jones

The “Gaza siege” is a favorite buzzword of the international media and the pro-Palestinian propagandists who feed it. The picture they have so successfully painted in the minds of most Westerners is that the entire population of Gaza is destitute, living in the most pitiable conditions known to man thanks to a heartless Israeli embargo.

We have published a number of stories this year demonstrating that the reality is quite different, and that highly publicized “humanitarian” efforts like the ill-fated “Free Gaza” flotilla are nothing more than stunts aimed at further smearing Israel.

Among those stories were:

  1. Palestinians admit Gaza not starving, Hamas steals aid
  2. Arab journalist: Gaza’s problem is not Israel
  3. More hard evidence Gaza is not starving
  4. New luxury mall opens in Gaza City

American columnist and radio host Debbie Schlussel last week highlighted even more evidence that there is barely even an embargo, let alone a siege, being imposed against the Gaza Strip.

Schlussel pointed to International Monetary Fund (IMF) figures that were predictably ignored by the mainstream media because they show a whopping 16 percent growth in the Gaza economy over the first half of 2010.

Others who are citing Schlussel’s report are asking how a territory purportedly under heavy siege and desperately reliant on meager humanitarian missions by rabble-rousing groups like the Free Gaza movement can experience economic growth at an annual rate of 16 percent?

For those viewing the situation with their eyes open, the answer is obvious. Gaza is not and has never been “under siege.” There is a limited embargo against the territory to prevent the terrorists who operate freely there from manufacturing weapons. But the amount of food and other supplies that enter Gaza is enough to pretty much feed everyone for free.

Nevertheless, there is a wide gap between the “haves” and have-nots” in Gaza, but that has everything to do with the corrupt and tyrannical terrorists that the Palestinians themselves voted into power, and very little to do with Israel.
