'Middle East peace talks only serve Obama'

Sunday, October 03, 2010 |  Ryan Jones

Renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations have almost no chance of success, and are being carried out for the sole benefit of US President Barack Obama and his hope of reelection.

So said Syrian President Bashar Assad during a weekend visit to the Iranian capital of Tehran.

“The talks are only aimed at supporting Obama’s position inside the US,” said Assad shortly after meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Assad and Ahmadinejad vowed to counter US-brokered “peace” efforts by increasing their support for “resistance,” a common reference to Palestinian and other Muslim terrorism targeting Israel and its Jewish population.

A growing number of commentators are insisting that, like George W. Bush before him, Obama is only focusing so heavily on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because he needs a major diplomatic achievement to shore up his faltering presidency.
