Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, hailed by the West as a “moderate,” declared on Sunday that the Palestinians are free to break their agreements with Israel at any time.
“We met our obligations, but you [Israel] did not, and so we are free from obligations,” Abbas said at the first annual Sir Bani Yas Forum on Peace and Global Security in Abu Dhabi.
Of course, Israel has complied with many previous agreements, as evidenced by the fact that Abbas’ Palestinian Authority today rules the bulk of the Arab population in Judea and Samaria, that the PA has an armed military force and that Israel has fully evacuated all Jews from the Gaza Strip.
Israelis recognize Abbas’ favorite tactic of ignoring past Israeli concessions and compliance by focusing solely on his pet demand of the day - which currently is that Israel cease all Jewish construction in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. As long as Israel fails to satisfy that new demand, Abbas claims that it is non-compliant, and always has been.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority has still not fulfilled its earliest peace process commitments to disarm and dismantle the Palestinian terrorist infrastructure, end anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian media and to educate its public for peace and coexistence. If anything, the Palestinians have moved in the opposite direction.
It is important to note that Abbas spoke in Arabic, which means his inflammatory words have been completely ignored by the international press, and will not in the least influence US-led international peace brokering in the region.
