Jericho pullout delayed

Thursday, March 10, 2005 |

Israel planned to pull out of the Biblical town of Jericho this week, but a dispute over security arrangements has caused a delay. The Palestinians are demanding that the main roadblock into the town be dismantled but Israel has refused, fearing that terrorists would have freedom of movement to launch attacks in Jewish settlements or nearby Jerusalem. If the sides cannot agree on sleepy Jericho, one has to wonder how they're ever going to tackle the really tough final status issues like Jerusalem, the fate of Palestinian refugees and final borders.
