The Middle East appears to be on
the cusp of democracy. That is being
hailed in the West, but Israel is
erring on the side of caution.
“In the Middle East, stability is preferable
to democracy,” said Lieutenant-
General Gabi Ashkenazi shortly before
completing his term as Israel’s chief of staff.
America has for decades been promoting
the idea that democracy among the
surrounding Arab states would guarantee
future peace with Israel and stability for
Democracy may be the best form of government we as men
are capable of, since we cannot guarantee
the integrity of an absolute ruler like
a king. But that doesn’t mean that every
culture, society or religious community is
fertile ground for democracy.
