Since the beginning of the demonstrations in Libya it is estimated that over 6,000 civilians have been killed. Col. Moammar Gadhafi declared war on his own people sending his army, air force, and mercenaries to quell the "trouble makers."
On Thursday the UN decided to take action and bring a stop to the massacre of innocent Libyans. The UN Security Council announced a resolution to enforce a no-fly zone over Libyan airspace and an arms embargo on the country. The purpose of this resolution is to protect the civilians of Libya.
On Saturday coalition forces launched operation “Odyssey Dawn” in order to enforce the UN resolution. French air-fighters attacked and destroyed Libyan tanks. The US and Britain also launched over 110 Tomahawk missiles in order to paralyze Libya’s antiaircraft capabilities.
In response to the attack Moammar Gadhafi has assembled in his palace loyal citizens, parliament members, and military personal with there families, creating a human shield for himself. The dictator then addressed the world promising a long war. Gadhafi threatened that if the operation continues Europe will be submitted to a wave of terror stemming from Africa.
Israel is taking Gadhafi's words seriously. Islamic terrorists could try to attack Israeli embassies in Europe or they may come from a different angle in order to jeopardize the nation. Israel trade routes on the Mediterranean Sea can be disturbed as well as its capabilities to operate in international water.
Just last week Israel commandoes seized an arms cache heading towards Gaza from cargo ship Victoria which was in international waters. Operation “Odyssey Dawn” might disable these kind of capabilities.
While Israel and the world wait to see what will come of Libya one thing is clear: From now on neither leader nor government can abuse their citizens.
