US helps Israel tackle libelous Goldstone report

UN-commissioned investigator Judge Richard Goldstone has very belatedly admitted that his report on the December 2008-January 2009 unjustly accused Israel of war crimes. But that isn’t stopping the UN from continuing to use the Goldstone Report as a platform to further smear the Jewish state.

Israeli officials have demanded that in light of Goldstone’s acknowledgements in a Washington Post article last week, the UN must rescind the commission’s original findings, which claimed that Israel had purposely targeted Palestinian civilians in its war on Hamas terror.

“If I had known then what I know now, the Goldstone Report would have been a different document,” Goldstone explained in his op-ed.

But Goldstone himself later told the Associated Press that he will not ask the UN to trash the report, as he does not believe it is entirely incorrect, only that it made an incorrect assessment of Israeli intentions based on a lack of data at the time.

US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice on Wednesday joined the fight, saying she did not believe the US and Israel could succeed in getting the Goldstone report rescinded, but that she does want to see the document “disappear and no longer be a subject of discussion and debate in the Human Rights Council or the General Assembly or beyond.”

“We see no need for the Goldstone report to be considered,” said Rice. “Now that its principal author has said what he said, frankly, our view is reinforced that this should go away and that’s what we’ll work to do.”

But some Israelis are not content to let Goldstone off so light.

Likud lawmaker Danny Danon, who is currently visiting the US, has helped initiate a lawsuit against Goldstone in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The suit is a class action complaint demanding that Goldstone officially apologize to the State of Israel and pay a symbolic amount of compensation.

“The Goldstone Report was a 2010 model of the blood libel,” Danon told The Jerusalem Post. “The distorted picture of the State of Israel that Goldstone generated harmed, harms and will continue to harm Israel and her citizens for decades.”
