Reports in the British media on Sunday suggested that Israeli special forces, including helicopters, operated inside Iran in recent years.
Late last month, the Obama Administration slapped sanctions on seven international firms for doing business with Iran. One of those firms was the Israeli shipping company Ofer Brothers, which was accused of selling cargo services to the Islamic Republic.
According to various reports, ships belonging to Ofer Brothers subsidiary Tanker Pacific Company docked in Iranian ports numerous times between 2004-2010.
American columnist Richard Silverstein later claimed that the Ofer Brothers ships had ferried Israeli Mossad agents and other special forces into Iran.
Unidentified military experts told London's Sunday Times that the Israeli-owned cargo ships could also have been carrying Blackhawk helicopters for use on reconnaisance missions against Iran's nuclear facilities.
Until last week, Ofer Brothers was under investigation by the Israeli Knesset for sending at least one of its ships to dock in Iran in 2010 in violation of international sanctions.
However, a Knesset hearing on the matter last Tuesday was abruptly adjourned and the legal proceedings against Ofer Brothers were canceled after the committee chairman received a mysterious note, presumably from high-ranking security officials.
