Israel recognized for world class olive oil

Last month Jerusalem played host to the second annual Terra Olivo Mediterranean International Olive Oil Competition, an event of growing popularity where the best olive oils of the region are rated.

International olive oil competitions are growing in popularity, with some reaching the prestigious levels of better-known wine competitions.

And Israel is quickly marking itself as a prime producer of olive oil.

At the Terra Olivo competition, which was held in various locations in Jerusalem over the course of a week in late May, Israeli oils won numerous awards.

While the top award of the competition went to a Spanish olive oil, no fewer than 27 Israeli companies won "Prestige Gold Medals" in the Extra Virgin Olive Oil category.

Israel is home to a significant number of large and boutique olive oil producers.
