Apple removes anti-Israel iPhone app

Apple Inc. on Wednesday acquiesced to an Israeli demand that it remove an anti-Israel third party application from its online App Store, a one-stop shop for software for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices.

The app in question was called "3rd Intifada" and provided users with information regarding planned protests and riots against Israel.

Diaspora Affairs Minister Yuli Edelstein said the app in calling for a third Palestinian intifada (or uprising) was inciting violence, and as such should be removed from the Apple App Store.

Edelstein sent a letter to Apple requesting the app be removed, and a day later it was.

On Thursday, Edelstein released a statement thanking Apple for not allowing itself to become a platform for hate-fueled propaganda.

"This is an additional step in preventing hostile elements, which are frequently tainted by anti-Semitism, from spreading incitement via the 'new media,'" said Edelstein. "By its action, Apple has proven, as Facebook did, that it shares the values that oppose violence, incitement and terrorism."

Earlier this year, the same organization that produced the "3rd Intifada" app created a Facebook Fan Page under the same banner. That page, until it was removed by Facebook, encouraged those opposed to the Jewish state to rush its borders.
