New poll: Egyptians want peace with Israel

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 |  Ryan Jones

A new poll conducted by Egypt's ruling military regime (make of that what you will) showed that a 67 percent majority of Egyptians want to maintain their nation's peace treaty with Israel.

An independent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center earlier this year in the wake of the Egyptian revolution showed that a 54 percent majority of Egyptians wanted to scrap the Egypt-Israel peace agreement.

There is speculation that the new poll conducted by the Egyptian regime could be rigged. Egypt receives a massive amount of American military aid as a condition of the Camp David Accord.

But, the numbers could also show a shift in attitude.

Many Egyptians riled up by the revolution and still angry at former dictator Hosni Mubarak could have been lashing out at all perceived enemies, including Israel, in the earlier poll.

Even if only a minority of Egyptians still want a return to hostilities with the Jewish state, Israelis will warn that the situation remains volatile.

Radical minorities in many surrounding nations - such as Lebanon, Syria and Iran - regularly have such a huge impact on local politics as to hold the entire region hostage to their agenda.

And with the Muslim Brotherhood, which does want to annul the peace treaty with Israel, gaining in power in Cairo, Egypt could easily be the next nation on that list.

It should also be pointed out that Egypt's peace with Israel has always been icy, and even if the treaty is maintained, relations are expected to cool even further.

The new Egyptian regime has recently been cozying up to Iran, whose leadership wants to annihilate Israel. Cairo has also significantly raised the price of the natural gas it provides to Israel, causing a serious economic problem.
