Annan meets separately with Israeli and Palestinian leaders

Monday, March 14, 2005 |
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has held separate talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in an effort to revive the “roadmap” peace plan. "The international community is determined to work with both sides to press for the implementation of the roadmap and work to ensure that...a Palestinian state is established side by side with Israel," Annan said. But Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told Annan that Israel would not open talks on the roadmap until the Palestinian Authority takes step to dismantle terrorist groups. Annan didn’t seem to get the message. Before meeting Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, he laid a wreath at the grave of Yasser Arafat. Privately, Israeli officials said that sends the wrong message about terrorism.
