New talks to break Jericho deadlock

Monday, March 14, 2005 |
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz will meet Palestinian Interior Minister Nasser Yousef today in another attempt to break the deadlock over Israel's planned withdrawal from the Biblical town of Jericho. The pullout was supposed to take place weeks ago, but disagreements over security arrangements and a deadly suicide bombing in Tel Aviv caused a delay. The sticking point is a Palestinian demand that Israel remove the main roadblock into Jericho. Israel has balked because it fears that would give Palestinian terrorists easy access to Jerusalem and nearby settlements. Under agreements reached at last month’s landmark summit in Egypt, Israel is supposed to withdraw from five towns in Judea and Samaria.
