Goldstone returns to defend Israel

Tuesday, November 01, 2011 |  Ryan Jones

Judge Richard Goldstone gave Israel's enemies a huge boost in their campaign to delegitimize the Jewish state when he submitted a UN-commissioned report accusing Israel of "war crimes" during its December 2008-January 2009 offensive against the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

On Tuesday, Goldstone returned to the headlines, this time to defend Israel against widespread accusations of practicing apartheid against local Arabs.

As a native of South Africa, Goldstone is all too familiar with what real apartheid looks like. He stated firmly in his New York Times op-ed that applying the term to Israel is "unfair and inaccurate slander."

Goldstone explained that when the term "apartheid" is used, it is meant to "evoke the situation in pre-1994 South Africa," where institutionalized racism was the order of the day.

By comparison, Goldstone pointed out that Arabs in Israel "vote, have political parties and representatives in the Knesset and occupy positions of acclaim, including on its Supreme Court. Arab patients lie alongside Jewish patients in Israeli hospitals, receiving identical treatment."

Goldstone slammed the claims of "Israeli apartheid" by the Palestinians and their supporters as being "calculated to retard rather than advance peace negotiations."
