Too dangerous for Israeli kids to go to school

Tuesday, November 01, 2011 |  Ryan Jones

Schools in the southern part of central Israel were closed for the third straight day on Tuesday amid fears that missiles fired from the Gaza Strip could result in mass casualties among local children.

Gaza rocket fire on southern Israel increased signficantly over the weekend. An Israeli man was killed and many more were wounded in a hail of rocket and mortar fire on Saturday.

Despite reports of a ceasefire, low-level rocket and mortar fire has continued. A number of the missiles have hit local schools and at least one synagogue.

While Israel's air strikes in Gaza are targeted operations that strive to avoid civilian casualties, Gaza-based terrorists fire their missiles at Israeli cities in an indiscriminate manner, seeking to simply cause as many casualties as possible.

A side effect of having so many schools closed is that many parents are having to take time off work to be at home, resulting in a slow down in local business.
