The New 7 Wonders Foundation on Sunday announced the 10 finalists for the New 7 Wonders of Nature, and among them was the Dead Sea.
Israel and Jordan have been heavily promoting the Dead Sea as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in order to encourage tourism to the area and boost local business.
"A win for the Dead Sea would mean hundreds of thousands of more tourists to the region every year, thousands of more job opportunities and an improvement in Israel's image overseas as an attractive tourism destination," said Israeli Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov.
In addition to being the lowest place on earth, the Dead Sea is also a plentiful source of unique minerals used in a wide array of products, most famously Dead Sea cosmetics.
The voting for the New 7 Wonders of Nature is taking place this week, and the winners will be announced on Friday, November 11.
Misezhnikov urged Israel's supporters to "not be apathetic...we must continue to vote for the Dead Sea in full force, both in Israel and around the world."
