Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas responded to Israel’s goodwill gesture by announcing that he would free a top terrorist in a Jericho prison, once Israel pulls out. The terrorist, Ahmed Sa’adat, was jailed for ordering the assassination of Israeli Cabinet Minister Rehavam Ze’evi in 2001. Israel was furious with Abbas, who is also known as Abu Mazen. "We will weigh carefully if there is any way of continuing the process when the message from Abu Mazen's side is becoming so negative and so contrary to the new spirit we would like to see," Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom told Israel Radio.
