Is Israel’s democracy really in danger,
or have the right-wing and
left-wing political camps simply
exchanged places? Is a right-wing
agenda less democratic because it firmly
adheres to the biblical right of inheritance?
The heated debate has exposed a
double standard: democracy for left-wing
values but not for the right.
“What on earth is the left in Israel
thinking? That the majority should not
be permitted to determine the agenda?”
asked legal expert Chaim Misgav. “Why
is a right-wing agenda illegitimate but
a left-wing agenda is not?”
Sometimes it seems that Israel’s
struggle to survive in its biblical homeland
comes at the expense of democracy. Israel is fighting for democracy,
while at the same time fighting for the
right to inherit the Land promised to
the Jewish people by God.
