Israeli education minister wants students to love the Bible

Sunday, January 01, 2012 |  Ryan Jones

Israeli Education Minister Gideon Saar has been on a mission for the past couple of years to improve biblical studies in Israeli schools. Last week he stated that Israeli students must not only learn the words of the Bible, they must learn to love the Bible.

"It's not just knowledge of the Bible that must be transmitted, but the love of our Bible that must be taught," Saar told Arutz 7 Radio ahead of the annual adult Bible Quiz last Tuesday. "I hope that the attitudes toward biblical studies that we see now will change."

Saar noted that average Israelis are starting to recognize that their current commercial culture on its own is rather shallow, and are seeking to balance that with a deeper understanding of their Bible-based heritage.

"We have received very broad public support for [our school program]," said Saar. "It is indicative of a very profound desire that exists in Israel's public."
